Professional Development Presentation

Your principal has asked you, the instructional coach, to develop a short presentation for the faculty on important aspects of effective inclusion. You may choose from one of the following areas (corresponding with the chapters in the text):

· Creating environments that foster acceptance and friendship

· Creating successful transitions to inclusive settings

· Creating a classroom environment that promotes positive behavior

Your task is to develop a powerpoint presentation and a handout on one of the areas listed above. The powerpoint and handout should provide enough information for your peers that any of them could improve their abilities and strategies for fostering inclusion, simply based on your presentation. Assume that your presentation would be at a faculty meeting, and you would have about a half-hour to present.

For your powerpoint, remember the 7-by-7 rule: No more than 7 lines of text, and no more than 7 words on each line. Use plain, conservative fonts.

When you have finished your powerpoint and your handout, submit them to the assignment link in the module, then post them to the discussion board to share with your classmates.

Step 1: Understand Your Task
You need to create:

  1. A PowerPoint presentation (using the 7×7 rule).

  2. A handout summarizing strategies teachers can use.

Both should focus on one of the three topics:

  3. Core Concepts – Key points about your chosen topic.

  4. Strategies – 3–5 practical examples.

  5. Implementation Tips – How teachers can apply them.

  6. Case Example – A quick scenario or success story.

  7. Summary – Major takeaways.

  8. References – APA citations.

Step 5: Create the Handout
The handout should:

  • Be 1–2 pages, easy to read.

  • Summarize your PowerPoint content.

  • Provide bullet-point strategies, tips, and references.

  • Be practical enough that teachers could apply the ideas tomorrow.

Step 6: Align with the Rubric

  • Content: Use research-based practices, provide examples, include a clear summary.

  • Strategy: Show how it directly supports inclusive practices.

  • Professionalism: Organize slides logically, keep fonts clear, avoid clutter.

  • Mechanics: Proofread for spelling, grammar, and flow.

Step 7: APA Style & References
Include at least 2–3 references in APA format on the last slide and in the handout. Example:
